Stony Brook UNITI Cultural Center

The recently completed UNITI Cultural Center in Stony Brook University’s is a complete renovation of the space in the reconstructed Student Union. The Center is committed to connecting students, faculty and staff through multicultural programs, social discourse, academic and experiential learning, support services and advocacy that contribute to a positive campus climate. The Center also serves as a resource for social justice education, community service and research and assessment about matters related to diversity.

Through the use of shape, color, texture and environmental wall and window graphics, the space communicates a welcoming atmosphere to students of all backgrounds. The inspiration for this design came first from images of ethnic food trucks and then incorporated ideas related to weaving, basket making and textures and textiles from around the world. A second layer influence came through international festivals and cultural celebrations with the use of vibrant colors, patterns and festival string lights.  It’s all pulled together with a giant red ribbon, representing the thread that connects us all, as well as a celebration of all that makes us unique and different.
