The design was influenced by the inherent industrial aesthetic and the desire to foster a sense of community. Much of the existing exterior envelope was retained and many original materials were integrated into the design, further honoring the buildings’ roots. Windowed doors and clerestory glazing helped promote a sense of openness. We managed to fit all program elements into the existing structure; 25 classrooms for up to 500 students, a multi-purpose room with kitchen, library, gymnasium, and a “Think Tank” – a glowing, cylinder-shaped room, clad in polycarbonate panels that functions as a student resource center. Most exciting to the process was coming together with the KaBoom! organization, NJ Community Development Corporation, and community volunteers to build the students’ outdoor playground.
